Alexander’s Discovery Applied to Chest Lift - II

Previously I wrote that the Chest Lift - a foundational Pilates movement - is widely misunderstood.

Chest Lift involves lying in semi-supine and raising your head and chest. You can continue this movement into Roll Up so you finally sit upright on the mat. Since starting PILANDES, I have met many clients at my Trials who tell me:

“I have not been able to do Roll Up for (10, 18, ever) years.”

And I know why.

With every one of those clients, their problem begins with muddy body mapping of how their movements need to be deployed. When you take my PILANDES Mat program, you also get access to over 70 videos which are designed to improve your ability to accurately Bodymap your Pilates movements. Accurate BodyMapping is central to successful Pilates practice, and Chest Lift is a perfect example of how effective it can be.

HOW TO DO CHEST LIFT

As I explained last time, you have almost no muscles built to flex your neck — just longus colli and the scalenes — set against a wall of extensors stacked four layers deep. That imbalance is why Chest Lift trips people up.

The key is understanding how the sternocleidomastoid (SM) muscle acts on your head - your head position determines whether it flexes or extends your neck. It must be set up correctly to act as an indirect flexor of your neck.

How do you do that?

This is why your head/spinal movement is critical. F.M. Alexander named it “primary control” as he discovered its wide influence in governing movement. In Chest Lift, we can see an example of why.

PILANDES shows that your head is in a continual movement of tilting forward. This is not something you can feel - it is automated subcortically. However, you can very easily override this action with a voluntary movement of your own.

This is the mistake most people make: they fail to initiate a clean forward tilt.

To act as a flexor, the SM muscle requires a clear, 15-degree tilt of the head at the Top Joint※. This correctly positions your mastoid process - where the SM muscle inserts - at an angle which allows the SM to flex your neck. When this happens, the extensors of the neck don’t fire, so your neck bends upward at great speed, amazing people with how easy it feels.

However, if this all sounds a little too technical for you to grasp, that’s good reason to come along to one of my PILANDES Trials and get personal instruction from me. Feel it for yourself. If everyone who has experienced it is to be trusted - you will be surprised at how easy it can be to do Chest Lift, then follow through to Roll Up.
