1 • Alexander's Discovery Applied to Chest Lift - I
Sep 13, 2026[Original English below]

Alexander’s Discovery Applied to Chest Lift - I
3 times in my 50+ year career, I have rediscovered F.M. Alexander’s discovery…
“Ahh - it starts with the head’s relation to the spine!”※
And here I am - through PILANDES - rediscovering the exact same thing again.
This 4th time was triggered by exploring Chest Lift - which is integrated into many Pilates movements. While being a mat exercise all on its own, Chest Lift is also a movement deployed in one-third of the standard Pilates Mat exercises.✝ Understanding how it is done is central to a successful Pilates practice.
In my experience, it is universally misunderstood.
CHEST LIFT
While lying in semi-supine, you raise your head off the floor with the rib cage following.
Simple enough.
So why is it misunderstood?
Because people unnecessarily co-activate.
Co-activation of both flexors and extensors of the neck at the same time all but guarantees that raising your head and chest will cost you far more effort than it needs to. What people are most surprised by - when they follow my cueing for Chest Lift - is how remarkably easy it feels. You should come to a Trial and feel it. Make sure you ask to be shown…
WHAT GOES WRONG IN CHEST LIFT?
First, compare the abundance of extensors to the scarcity of flexors acting on the cervical spine itself. Technically speaking — leaving aside any muscles that act directly on the head — the flexors of the cervical spine involve only longus colli, and, in a minor way, the scalenes, which flex only weakly since their main job is lifting the ribs in breathing. However, sternomastoid does also influence neck flexion, but only under certain conditions. The extensors, by contrast, are vast: a thick, intermingling mass of muscle arranged in roughly four layers down the back of the neck.
This vast number of neck extensors is always eager to act.
However, there’s a little trigger that will switch off this effortful extensor co-activation - which in turn results in the ease that surprises people who experience it in PILANDES.
That is what I will be writing about next.
Stay Tuned.
※ I used to think FM’s discovery was “primary control,” i.e., that head movements govern vertebral coordination. This is still a primary discovery, but your control system is infinitely more complex than just your head/spinal relationship - it acts as a catalyst, and there are always other factors to consider. Working with these factors is why Alexander teachers spend upwards of 4-6 years training to be educators.
✝ Chest Lift with Rotation, Hundreds, Hundreds Prep, Cat & Cow, Rolling Like A Ball, Roll Up, Single & Double Leg Stretch, Criss Cross, Spine Stretch Forward, Hamstring Pull, Open Leg Rocker, Seal, Neck Pull, Teaser, Push Up, Boomerang & Crab all involve this Chest Lift movement. It is a foundational movement.
